Choosing the Right Paint Sheen for Every Room
Color gets all the attention, but sheen — how shiny the finish is — has just as much impact on how a room looks and how the paint holds up. The rule of thumb: the higher the sheen, the more durable and washable the surface, but the more it highlights imperfections in the wall.
Flat and matte finishes hide surface flaws beautifully, which makes them a favorite for ceilings and low-traffic spaces. Eggshell is the workhorse for most walls — enough sheen to wipe clean while still hiding minor imperfections.
Satin steps up the durability for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and kids' spaces. It handles humidity and repeated cleaning well — important in our climate. Semi-gloss belongs on trim, doors, baseboards, and cabinets, giving that crisp contrast that makes trim work pop.
Two local notes: in high-humidity rooms, a quality bath-and-spa paint with mildew inhibitors is worth the small upcharge. And if your walls have texture or patched areas, staying one step lower in sheen will keep those repairs invisible.
