Cabinet Refinishing vs. Replacement: What Actually Makes Sense?
New cabinetry is one of the most expensive line items in a remodel — and that is before counting demolition, new countertops, and weeks without a working kitchen.
Refinishing flips that math. If your cabinet boxes are structurally sound, professional refinishing delivers the visual transformation of new cabinets at a fraction of the cost, usually in under a week.
The key word is professional. Done properly: doors and drawer fronts come off and get labeled, every surface is degreased and scuff-sanded, a bonding primer locks onto the old finish, and a durable cabinet enamel goes on in controlled coats for a factory-style result.
Replacement makes sense when boxes are water-damaged or delaminating, or when you are changing the kitchen layout. For everything else, refinishing is one of the highest-return projects in the house.
